Naomi Nonu is my daughter and leads worship at Family Faith Centre with her husband Ulu who plays keyboard. She also heads up the SuperKids Program as well as sharing the preaching/teaching program. This is an article she wrote a while back for the weekly church newsletter, so I felt to share it with you today! I thought it appropriate as we near Christmas; the season of God’s love for all of us!
Recently, Dr Norman (my Dad), spoke to us about ‘Love’. It was an excellent message!
So maybe you’re saying, “Well what’s love got to do with me, I’m too young to get married?” or “I’m already married, so what’s love got to do with me now?”
Love has everything to do with our lives, not just in marriage, but as Christians!
We are ambassadors for Christ here on the earth. The Word says His love is in our hearts (Romans 5:5), so we must be obedient stewards of that love. But let’s talk about a specific kind of love…
The love of children towards their parents – and not just small children – I’m talking about us as adults loving our parents.
Ephesians 6:1-2 Amplified Bible: “Children obey your parents in the Lord [As His representatives], for this is just and right. Honour (esteem and value as precious) your father and your mother, this is the first commandment with a promise.”
This is for all of us, no matter what age we are. It is a command and it has a promise.
Look at verse 3, “That all may be well with you and that you may live long on the earth.”
I love what Pastor John Osteen said, “If your parents are elderly, it’s not enough to just help your parents financially when they need it. You need to show your love and affection. You need to fellowship with them. It is far more precious to them that you share your life personally than just send them a cheque each month! Honour, esteem and value as precious your father and your mother! That is the answer to long life!”
My mum [Elizabeth] always said to me that LOVE is spelt T-I-M-E, if you love someone, you spend time with them, listening to them. That’s why I spend time with my parents. Ian [my brother] and Dad meet each week for Father-Son fellowship time, and my older sister visits several times a week to help mum with her housework. Mum and I love to do craftwork together or feed the ducks at the local pond and chat. I love to fellowship with my parents.
Perhaps you could find something your parents enjoy and do it with them and encourage them. If you're older and your parents have passed away, then you’ve got a job to do!! You need to teach this to your children and grandchildren if you haven’t already. Leave them a heritage to be proud of, so they can esteem you and say, “My mother/father/ grandmother/father always prayed for me, spent time with me, encouraged me in the Word and in the love of God.”
Maybe you could start something special with your child (regardless of their age) like going out for Saturday morning breakfast together where YOU listen (without butting in!), really listen to what is in their heart, and encourage them.
People are THE most important thing to God. They should be to us too. With each of us doing our part as we ought, we get our job done for the Lord and show a mighty witness to the world while we’re at it.
Share God’s heart with your family today.
